Re: The State Department’s change of FYROM’s
name to “Republic of Macedonia”
Dear Mr.
President:
The territory,
which has been known as “Macedonia” for more than 2,500 years,
transcends modern national borders, incorporating parts of Greece,
Albania, FYROM and Bulgaria. There are approximately 3,000,000
Macedonians, within the Greek region of Macedonia of sound Greek
citizenship as sound as the American citizenship to Floridian’s or to
Texan’s.
There is strong
historical evidence that the use of the name "Macedonia" by the
FYROMians has its roots in precisely the type of regional ethnic hatred
and violent territorialism, which has so, horrified the world since the
dissolution of the former Yugoslavia.
Therefore, The
decision by the State Department to officially recognize the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as the "Republic of Macedonia" is
an act of disgraceful proportions as it relates to a staunch ally Greece
who fought as allies with the U.S. in 4 wars in the 20th
century, whose defeat of Mussolini’s forces in 1940 (the turning point
in World War II, who gave the communists their first defeat by arms
(1946-49), who is an important partner in the war of terrorism, and who
is the strategic key for the United States in the Balkans and the
Eastern Mediterranean."
Worse yet, this
action at a time when both countries had just agreed to accelerate and
expedite their negotiations on the name issue, stabs, once again, the
American credibility before the eyes of an increasingly skeptical and
fearful world community that views America as a self righteous,
arrogant, and going-it-alone maverick with selective, at best, respect
for the international rule of law.
Mr. President,
on behalf of our Canadian membership (Canadian citizens of Hellenic
Macedonian ancestry) who believe that their Governments should allow the
two sovereign states involved to resolve the issue without the U.S
pressure, we urge you to take whatever measures available to rescind
this decision.
Yours truly,
For the Pan-Macedonia Association of Canada
Bob Moutousides, President
